Behind the Craft: The Making of the Mr Cramer Rouge Coat
Follow the transformation from blanket to a beautiful garment
The Origin
This blanket came to us as a gift from our neighbor, Mr. Bras, when we moved into our new space.
After careful cleaning and preparation, it was transformed in our Amsterdam studio into the piece you see today.
The Making
The process unfolded over several days, from selecting the structure drawing the pattern and cutting the material, to shaping the garment and completing the final details.
Each step was done by hand, respecting the original textile and its character.
Details & Techniques
• Reinforced internal structure for durability
• Precision cutting to preserve original patterns of the blanket
• Hand-finished pockets, lining, and buttons
• Custom lining added for comfort and warmth
Material Notes
Each textile is pre-washed before transformation.
Due to its age, small imperfections and variations remain — part of its history and uniqueness.
Story Behind the Coat
This one-of-a-kind jacket is made from a vintage wool blanket by Zaalberg (Leiden, est. 1814). It was gifted by our neighbor, Mr. Bras, as a way of supporting our work.
Inside the blanket, we discovered small traces of its past, a 1992 “dry cleaning” tag from Amsterdam’s Javastraat and a hand-sewn name label probable the surname of the soldier adding to its unique character.
Carefully transformed in October–November 2024, Katerina redesigned and handcrafted the coat, including hand-mending and a custom lining. Each button is sewn by hand, with finishing touches completed in our partner atelier.
A Piece That Lives On
This coat carries over 60 years of history, reworked into a new form.
Made to be worn, kept, and passed on.
