The Story behind the garment
I discovered a very charming vintage tablecloth from Allier, France, adorned with hand-embroidered roses and a light burgundy border. Michele, a passionate antique seller (mostly of kids' comics and old school games), had preserved this exquisite textile, which was among her grandmother's belongings and likely reworked from an antique cotton sheet.
Inspired by its intricate design I transformed it into a wearable piece. We incorporated pleats for a beautiful drape and complemented the design with deep burgundy deadstock cotton fabric from my 2013 collection in Athens. By revisiting my fabric collection instead of buying new materials, this garment blends the past and present, honoring the rich history and craftsmanship of vintage textiles.
Back in our studio, I was captivated by the vibrant colors and nostalgia embedded in the 60’s finding. I envisioned a one-of-a-kind skirt that would blend the vintage charm of the tablecloth with modern elegance. I wanted to create a design that fits more body types, so I decided on a one-size wrap skirt, letting the raw textiles determine the sizes. After several days of careful planning, I decided to incorporate pleats—a detail I love to work with, as seen in our Olea salopette pants. Pleats add a touch of sophistication and enhance the fabric's natural drape.
I named this skirt version Melidia, inspired by my daughters Melina and Lydia. They adored the design and even requested their own, making it a truly special creation:)

The Final Design
Our Melidia wrap skirt features two sets of ties, designed to fit a range of body types from XS to M/L. This ensures easy size selection and provides a comfortable, flattering fit for all.
Waist Ties: One set of ties, approximately 1.70 meters in length, wraps around your waist to secure the garment in place.
Hip Ties: The other set of ties, each approximately 38-40 centimeters long, ties around the hip area, adding versatility and allowing for further customization.
Additionally, the waistband is elasticated on the back side only, enhancing both comfort and flexibility.
The front half of the skirt, made from burgundy cotton, is adorned with five meticulously crafted pleats. These pleats add a chic, draping effect that enhances the overall elegance of the piece, creating a beautiful, flowing silhouette. The other part of the skirt, made from the vintage tablecloth, features dual front darts for a flattering shape.
The skirt is thoughtfully designed to highlight the unique details of the original tablecloth, preserving its beauty and charm. The wrap style not only offers adjustable comfort but also adds a touch of effortless elegance to your wardrobe. How to wear it.
To wear the skirt, slide the waist long tie through the buttonhole on the upper edge of the fabric. Pull the right corner tie through the buttonhole and keep it taut. Wrap the left corner around your body until it reaches the buttonhole, then tie both ties together into a single bow. Adjust the skirt for a comfortable fit; it should rest snugly against your waist or hips without pinching or feeling loose. If necessary, untie and readjust until you achieve the perfect fit.
The Story Behind the Garment
This unique piece began its journey through this charming vintage tablecloth from Allier, France, adorned with large hand-embroidered roses and a light burgundy border. The fabric, a remarkably soft antique cotton sheet, was likely reworked to create the intricate embroidery, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship. Michele, a passionate vintage antique seller from Allier, had preserved this beautiful textile, which belonged to her grandmother. My appreciation for Michele’s findings spans eras, potentially from the 1950s to the 1970s, or perhaps even older.
I decided to breathe new life into it by transforming it into a wearable piece. In our studio, we incorporated pleats to accentuate its natural drape. To complete the design, I selected a deep burgundy deadstock cotton fabric from my collection, found in Athens during a memorable summer seminar in 2013. That year, my Saturdays were spent exploring Athens’ old-school fabric stores, buying small amounts of fabric for inspiration—a habit I dearly miss.
As a designer passionate about saving and reviving vintage textiles, I am thrilled that I didn’t need to purchase anything new for this skirt. By revisiting my collection of deadstock fabrics, I created a piece that blends past and present. This approach results in a garment rich in history, carrying forward the passion of those who cherished these materials before me.
Reworked with love in our new studio, this garment is a testament to the timeless beauty of vintage craftsmanship and modern creativity.
